Grand County Search and Rescue (GCSAR), was paged out Saturday afternoon, March 21, to rescue a man who had lost his shoes in the backcountry.

Braden Huff, 18, of Highlands Ranch went for a hike up Baker Gulch in the Neversummer Range wearing only tennis shoes, even though there was several feet of snow in the area. About two miles from the trailhead he lost both of his shoes in deep snow.

Luckily, he was able to reach 9-1-1 with his cell phone. Huff had some food and water, but no way to start a fire.

A team of six GCSAR volunteers with an extra pair of boots and snowshoes reached Huff at sunset, arriving back at the trailhead by 9:30 p.m.

GCSAR is an all-volunteer organization and never charges for search and rescue.
