Grand County seeks input on salaries

Staff Report

Grand County has posted a poll on its website seeking taxpayer input on implementation of a state law that could provide salary increases for elected officials by up to 30 percent.

The posting, which can be viewed online at, says:

“The Grand County Board of County Commissioners wants your opinion.

“Senate Bill 15-288 – Concerning the compensation paid to certain public officials

“This Bill was approved and signed by the Governor Hickenlooper on June 3, 2015, and it allows for an increase in salary for elected officials.

“Grand County is a Category III county. According to SB 15-288, persons elected in 2017 or after would be paid according to Category III A. This means that in 2017, 2 of Grand County’s elected officials could receive the increase. In 2018, the remaining 7 elected officials would receive the increase. The approved increase is 30% by default. SB 15-288 also allows for the legislature to reduce the increase. The change could be 10% increase, 20% increase or no increase. The BOCC would appreciate public input on this matter. Please vote only once. Responses will be taken thru September 11, 2015.”

The posting also includes a table that indicates current pay of elected officials and pay rates under 10- 20- or 30-percent increases. The sheriff is the highest paid elected official at $76,000 annually. With a 30 percent increase, that would jump to $98,800. The county commissioners, currently paid $58,500, would make $76,050 with a 30 percent increase.
