Grand County should administer fire districts, EMS and search & rescue

To the Editor:Why is it I always get a headache whenever I read anything about the fire protection districts, EMS or search and rescue? Three models of public inefficiency. Why is it EMS is always scrambling to find places for on-call people to hang their hats? Why is it the ambulance isn’t housed where the EMS people are? Why is it we always seem to build giant Taj Mahal’s for fire companies that have very few calls per year? The idea of the fire protection district was probably a good idea 100 years ago, but why are they still around, other than to promote personal fiefdoms? The fire protection districts should be dissolved, and a county-wide emergency services division should be created with all three emergency services included. EMS, fire protection and search & rescue. The fire houses with housing could be put to better use as shift housing for full time paid people instead of permanent housing for volunteer firefighters. Members of each division should be cross-trained in the duties of the other divisions. A non-political emergency services executive should be hired to run the entire operation and should be accountable to the county commissioners. Then we would have one administration instead of three separate administrations. We would have shared resources instead of duplication. Oh wait, that just might save some tax dollars. Oh my. We can’t have that, can we? After all, we really don’t care how much we tax all of those vacation homes do we?Fred HoytGranby
