Grand County tries to boot Workforce Center

Grand County and the state-funded Colorado Workforce Center are hashing out a lease dispute concerning the county’s only location for unemployment resources.

The Workforce Center, which operates rent-free out of the county-owned building at 469 Topaz Ave., Granby, is being told its lease is in jeopardy for “occupying more space than the lease permits,” according to Grand County Attorney Jack DiCola.

The county served the Center an eviction notice on Dec. 20 – dated Dec. 17 – saying the Workforce office would need to vacate the premises by 5 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 23.

Since the delivery of the eviction notice, however, arrangements have been made to meet face-to-face on Jan. 3 to discuss conflicts concerning how the building is being used, according to DiCola.

A call to a representative of the Granby-based Colorado Workforce Center was not returned by press time.

Granby’s Colorado Workforce Center occupies a designated 570 square-feet of space in the Topaz Avenue building adjacent to the county road and bridge shop. The Workforce Center shares the building with the Grand County Natural Resources department.

“It got their attention,” DiCola said of the eviction notice, signed by him.

Prior conversations between the county’s tenants and Workforce tenants have failed to resolve issues, he said.

DiCola added that the county recognizes the Workforce Center is “something beneficial to the county.

“We like having them there. We’re not charging them any rent. We just want them to be good tenants.”
