Grand County voters responsible for property tax increases

To the Editor:

The opinion piece “Perfect Storm” (Jan. 25) was right on. You described the reasons for higher property taxes precisely.

Many folks have mentioned the horrendous increases and wondered why. We the people dumped TABOR (basically restricts tax mill increases as the tax base increases), passed bond issues and voted big spenders into office. We dumped TABOR for school spending, for county spending, for the fire district and only politicians know what else.

We bonded a new courthouse and bonded school additions, bonded a recreation building and bonded a golf course building.

So, you identified the problem, and it is us.

Then, to add insult to injury, we the people will no doubt ignore the fact that the school district (East Grand), after the bond election, “found” over $800,000 which wasn’t identified before the election.

We certainly do get the government we deserve.
