The Grand County Democrats are getting ready for Independence Day.
The day begins with a parade down Granby’s Main Street at 11 a.m. Members of the Grand County Dems will march in the parade. They have a tradition of giving out vintage matchbox cars and candy along the route.
“This parade is a highlight of our year; it’s a great time to celebrate with our family, friends, and neighbors,” stated the Grand County Dems secretary, Abby Loberg, in a news release.
As a lifelong parade fan and Granby resident, Loberg added that the party will hand out pocket U.S. Constitutions “as a reminder that patriotism isn’t just parades, picnics, and fireworks; it’s also civic engagement.”
“As Democrats we currently find ourselves to be the patriotic opposition with very real concerns about the direction our beloved country is taking,” stated Grand County Dems chair Liz Newsom in the release. “The Declaration of Independence gave us our freedom, but it is the Constitution that keeps us free. We are living in a time when the Constitution our forebears fought for is being disregarded.”
After the parade, the Grand Democrats will have a booth at the Party in the Park at Polhamus Park for community members to stop by. They can grab a pocket U.S. Constitution and learn more about the organization.
Members of the Grand County GOP will also have a table at the park where community members can stop by.
“We hope that everyone, regardless of what party they may find themselves aligning with, takes a moment today to think about what freedom means to them,” stated Newsom.
