Grand Lake area motel fire investigation awaits lab test results

The investigation into the Isolation Peaks Motel fire on June 13 is still pending results from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, according to Grand County Sheriff’s Investigator Leo Piechocki.

“Without all the facts in, it appears the first fire at the hotel was electrical and started in the attic,” Piechocki said on Wednesday, referring to the physical investigation and potential results of another investigation of cause and origin conducted by the motel owner’s insurance company.

But CBI lab tests sent for analysis on June 16 are central to any conclusion, Piechocki said.

A CBI investigation conducted following a second fire that started at the motel that day found traces of what appeared to be a poured accelerant similar to gasoline, Piechocki said, and a CBI-trained dog alerted authorities to the spots.

But until lab results are available, there is no way of knowing whether the marks were misinterpreted or whether there’s a chance they were related to the fire.

“It’s not unusual for lab results from CBI to take months,” Piechocki said.
