If you are looking for a way to kick off your summer, head to Town Park in Grand Lake on Saturday.

The Grand Lake Fire Department is co-sponsoring the 26th Annual State Chili Cook-Off with Sagebrush BBQ, Grand Lake Brewery, Mountain Family Center and the Colorado Chili-Pod.

Grand Lake Fire Department administrator Mindy Everhart said it will be a fun event and a great way to support local children.

“Band, beer, sunshine – it is a high energy event,” Everhart said. “All for a great cause.”

The Colorado Chili-Pod’s mission is to promote chili and raise money for charitable organizations.

“They are a wonderful group,” Everhart said.

Everhart said the cook-off has been going on for years and now benefits Grand Lake children in need of academic scholarships.

The Grand Lake Scholarship and Community Assistance Fund started in 2005 to help the youth in the community participate in school functions. In the past they have sent students to destinations including Europe, Bolivia, Austria and Washington, D.C.

“We made this fund for kids in our fire district to help further their cultural education,” Everhart said.

Everhart said the event will include a barbecue, large silent auction, 30 chili cook-off competitors, live music by Hunker Down, crafters and more.

Chili judges are needed for the competition portion at 1 p.m., and anyone can be a judge.

Everhart wants people to know they can not only give money through the silent auction, but also make donations as well.

The silent auction starts Saturday at 10 a.m. followed by music at noon and chili-tasting throughout the day, with the silent auction ending at 4 p.m.
