The Grand Lake Rotary club recently announced Petr Esmonde as the 2015 winner of the Grand Lake Citizen of the Year award.

This is the 13th year of the Rotary-sponsored event, and the winner of this award is selected by an independent committee of previous recipients.

Peter Esmonde, a former Seabee, also known as “Peter the Painter,” has been a legendary force in Grand Lake since the 1990’s, through his drive to make Grand Lake a welcoming home to any and all. Peter is a natural born people person. He is an ambassador for Grand Lake.

A former Lacrosse player he also is an avid Pickle Ball player an Alpine Skier and has worked with the Winter Park Nastar team. As Peter has said, “If you see something and can do something about it, do it.” He has also said that since he “wasn’t born a scholar, he had to become a gentleman.” As such, he founded The Gentlemen’s Club, which does what needs doing.

Peter earned a theology degree and was a minister for over 20 years, restored Louie Heckert’s Model T, “Black Beauty” and donated it to the Town of Grand Lake for its various holiday parades He served as President of the ISC for 12 years. He has organized the Memorial Day Parade and Veterans Tributes, which this year included over 150 veterans. Peter is selfless in his efforts to make Grand Lake a “grand” place to visit and live.

Peter’s achievements will be honored on October 23, starting at 6 p.m. with a dinner in his honor. For more information or to reserve space, please contact rayhauschel@icloud.com or call 970.627.3097.
