A new local group in Grand Lake, Outstanding Grand Lake Coalition, is in the process of requesting Grand Lake to have official designation as an Outstanding National Resource Water (ONRW).

“It is a three-year process,” said Samantha Bruegger, Executive Director at the Grand Lake Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Outstanding Grand Lake Coalition.

“We are looking for people in the water community to get involved.”

Using Lake Tahoe as the model, Bruegger and the coalition wants this to be a grass-roots community movement. The group isn’t lobbying to make changes to the environmental aspects of the lake, they want to preserve it for future generations, and this designation will help them realize the goal.

“We support pumping as it is now,” she said. “We can still enjoy the lake and conserve it as it is. We want to work with everyone including Denver Water and Northern Water.”

Grand Lake is Colorado’s largest and deepest natural lake and fed by headwater streams flowing from Rocky Mountain National Park.

“ONRW designation will support national and Colorado values that include enjoyment of our recreational treasures including fishing, boating around the nation’s highest yacht club, the uniqueness of Colorado’s largest and deepest natural lake, and an aesthetic focal point for Rocky Mountain National Park which attracts over 3.5 million visitors each year from around the world,” said Bruegger.

The group is using the hashtag: #wearethecolorado to garner support. Visit for more information.
