The Friends of the Grand County Library Inc. invite you to sit down with them at the Third Annual “Tops of the Rockies” on Friday in Grand Lake.

The event takes place as the sun sets at the Grand Lake Yacht Club, which has once again donated the space for the fundraiser. The event is a rare chance for the public to see the historic clubhouse, which is usually only open to members and is the local base for the popular Lipton Cup sailing races.

As patrons take a look around the clubhouse, they’ll not only feast their eyes on the spectacular views and architecture, but the tables themselves ” a highlight of the evening each year.

The event, a fundraiser for the Juniper Library in Grand Lake and the other libraries throughout the county, features free wine tasting (by the Republic National Distributing Company) and light hors d’oeuvres (by the Terrace Inn) as guests socialize and peruse decorated tabletops. Grand Lake Wine and Spirits is also donating RNDC red and white wines along with other spirits and beer available at a cash bar. Joan Shaw of The Uprights will also be playing piano accompaniment for the event.

Nine settings, along with many services and other decorative and useful items on the tables, will be auctioned off during the evening celebration. Since the event is a library fundraiser, the tops, designed by local businesses and residents, were created with a book theme in mind.

“The tables are very imaginative,” said Pat Raney, chair of the event. “One designer has decided that instead of the table, she will design a wonderful picnic basket display.” Another display Raney highlighted incorporates a rustic bar with unique bar stools as the basis for the designer’s interpretation of a classic Western novel. In addition, one of the tables will be specially painted by a local children’s book artist.

During the auction there are to be items available in many price ranges, with one of the biggest items being two full weeks at a two-bedroom, two-bath condo on the Big Island of Hawaii. Some of the table tops will have specific items available for auction; other times the entire table will be auctioned off.

Karen Fry Weisbrich, who has been visiting the Three Lakes area since she was a child and had attended a similar event in Dallas, Texas, brought the idea before several members of the Friends organization. It has been a successful event ever since, raising more than $10,000 each year for Grand County libraries.

Friends of the Grand County Library is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to support Grand County’s five libraries by raising funds to enhance book materials and program budgets. Funds from the Tops of the Rockies event will help finish a phase of the Mountain Libraries Campaign and help the District win a $250,000 challenge grant from the Gates Family Foundation of Denver and a $50,000 challenge grant from the Boettcher Foundation.

Advance tickets are $55 each. A limited number of at-the-door tickets may be available and will be $65 per person.
