Guest opinion: Waldow, Amendment 69 may not be perfect, but it’s better than what we have now

Shall State Taxes be increased $25billion annually……sounds scary, doesn’t it? Unless you realize that the money is replacing the $31 billion we are currently spending on our current health insurance premiums and deductibles. We will actually be saving money in the process and everyone will have health care with no premiums, deductibles nor out-of-network issues. Sounds too good to be true BUT actually our current system is too bad to be true. The economic analysis for Amendment 69 is on the website. During initial set-up, if the waiver from the ACA or the expected federal funds are not realized, the amendment will not be enacted as per section 16 of the Amendment.

The opponents are saying it doubles our state budget. The money collected goes into a different account completely separate from the budget. It has nothing to do with our budget. It is only collected as a tax and then goes into the account. Does it matter whether it is a tax or premium? We will be getting better health care for less money. The board of the 21 trustees who will manage program will be elected by us for four year alternating terms. Their meetings will be open. I have never been to a meeting of the board of my insurance company nor voted for any of the members. Have you? I did not vote for the average 20.4 percent increase in premiums for 2017 nor for any of the people who decided on that increase. Did you?

Senior citizens will not pay any taxes on the estimated first $33,000 of their annual net retirement income for an individual or $60,000 for a couple. And it will replace their supplemental Medicare policy. The 319 small businesses who have calculated their savings have endorsed the amendment. The medical portion of Worker’s Compensation will be covered under the plan which is estimated to be an average of 59 percent of the cost of Worker’s Compensation.

It did not work as proposed in Vermont because their risk pool is 1/10 of ours, they have no big medical centers and too many people were exempted. The authors of amendment 69 consulted with the people in Vermont to be sure we had none of the same problems. Universal healthcare works in developed countries around the world: ask my son about the medical care he and my grandson received in Brazil, ask Robin how she like the medical system when she lived in Germany, ask Veronica about the emergency care she received in Thailand or asked Mark about how much his cousin likes the Canadian system. People in other countries do not go bankrupt to receive medical care and they have better health outcomes. They do not have to choose between insurance and a mortgage. You can calculate what your cost and probable savings will be at

Amendment 69 may not be perfect but it thousands of times better than what we have now.
