Heavy holiday traffic in Grand Lake added to accident delays

Grand Lake had its busiest Independence Day weekend in five years, which contributed to significant traffic delays following a fatal holiday accident.

According to Grand County commissioners meeting minutes, traffic counts showed about 6,300 vehicles in Grand Lake on July 4, and an estimated 15,000 people in town. Grand County Sheriff Rod Johnson said traffic is considered heavy if counts exceed 4,000 cars. Only one Colorado State Patrol officer was on duty in the area.

County commissioners, Emergency Medical Services and the sheriff discussed whether traffic could have been detoured around the July 4 accident. The detour would have involved three miles of unpaved roads and was considered too problematic, especially for visitors unfamiliar with the area.
