Highway 9 project is long overdue

Highway 9 project is long overdue

To the Editor:

I am the UPS Driver for The Lower Blue and West Grand County. I am writing this letter in the hope of raising awareness regarding the plan to improve Highway 9. There is a desperate need to reduce the wildlife-vehicular conflicts along this section of the highway. For over 20 years, twice a day, I have driven this road and have seen first-hand the thousands of dead deer and elk that have been killed. Each one tells a story about a collision with a car or truck. For some people this may not seem like a dire problem. For many, so many people the consequences were tragic. Not just the property damage but the loss of life. I have personally witnessed so many close calls, and there could easily have been thousands more.

Finally a plan is emerging. The “Citizens For A Safe HWY 9” held a presentation before the Summit County Commissioners detailing the improvements that have been envisioned. This is a plan that is supported by the Colorado Department of Transportation, Grand County, stakeholders and property owners. This plan needs our support as well. Summit County and the towns within would benefit greatly from these improvements to the highway, making it safer for our workers, tourists and so many people who travel this highway. I urge everyone to contact the Summit and Grand commissioners and ask they endorse this project and pledge to help with some level of funding. This is an extremely important project and your action will help to make it a reality.
