Hike, community discussion on back country retreats

Sky-Hi News Staff Report

The Grand Huts Association (GHA) is pursuing several leads in an effort to build the non-profit’s second Hut.  Join the group on Sunday, Sept. 11 for a hike and discussion of a community vision of more back country retreats for Grand County.

Meet outside the Fraser Activity Center (Walk Through History Park, just north of the Holiday Inn in Fraser) at 8:30 a.m. and carpool up Churches Park Road about 5 miles to an old logging road just west of the Tipperary Pass trailhead.  The group will follow the route for about two miles to the edge of a square mile of land which belongs to the State of Colorado (State Land Board).

This agency may be open to using part of its square mile of land for a hut.  The section drops down north facing slopes, summiting on the North Summit of Ptarmigan Peak at 11,600 feet, dropping down to about 10,400 feet.
This idea is in its gestation stage. There  are several other directions GHA is exploring. The hike will give the group time to discuss how they can build Grand County’s hut industry.

If you cannot make the hike but would like to be involved, you can come to our monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 16 in the Fraser Activity Center. Contact Andy Miller, 970-531-0674 with any questions or if you can’t make either event and wish to be involved.
