Hot Sulphur Springs man sentenced for October assault

A Hot Sulphur Springs man who pleaded guilty to Class 1 misdemeanor assault of knowingly or willingly causing bodily injury received his sentencing June 6. The man, Justin Opinker, 40, allegedly assaulted his then 76-year-old father in October 2022.
An arrest affidavit stated that Opinker’s father had a bruise on his shin and told Grand County Sheriff’s deputies he wanted his son to get mental health help. Deputies arrested Opinker for a Class 6 felony assault charge at the time.
Opinker’s sentencing includes $1,489.50 in total fines and costs, 24 hours of community service and two years of probation. He also must complete substance abuse and mental health evaluations and recommended treatments.
