Human remains found on Strawberry Creek believed to be missing hunter

Human remains found Wednesday, April 29, along Strawberry Creek on the Little H O Ranch property in Grand County have been confirmed as those of missing hunter Richard Kothanek, 51, of Littleton.

Kothanek became lost while hunting in the Arapaho National Forest in November 2014. He was last seen on Saturday, Nov. 15, near Meadow Creek Reservoir east of Tabernash.

The remains were discovered Wednesday by one of the Little H O Ranch property caretakers. Lt. Dan Mayer, Sheriff’s Department spokesman, explained that where the body was found and other factors have led officials to believe the remains are Kothanek’s.

“We knew he was following a creek,” said Mayer. “We think it was Strawberry Creek. We have been hoping that when things started thawing he would be located.”

Lt. Mayer also said the department has not found any evidence to indicate anything suspicious or criminal was involved. Mayer said he hopes the discovery of the remains will help bring closure to Kothanek’s family following the tragic hunting accident.

A search for Kothanek began the evening of Nov. 15. The search was suspended on Nov. 18 following heavy snow and nighttime temperatures that dipped to 16 below zero.
