Injured moose deserves humane treatment

To the Editor:

We were very saddened by the incident reported in your Aug. 30th news column of a young moose being hit by a vehicle near the Winter Park Resort area and left with a back leg broken as it was by the Department of Wildlife. We’d like to see Sky-Hi News further investigating the reasons why Wildlife decided to leave the injured animal without giving it the necessary assistance, which threatened the moose’s survival. Has the animal been monitored since Aug. 28? What was its age/gender, and those of the motorist, any known circumstances of the collision?

Back in Ventura County where we used to live, an injured wild animal would, at the least, be transported by rescue network volunteers to a treatment center. When we visited South Germany, we saw injured animals transported to a wild animals hospital in Switzerland.

We are talking about incidents when animals suffering were not even caused by humans.

In this case, we believe the motorist should also be financially liable to cover the treatment of its animal victim. It’s our moral obligation to treat the damage we are causing to nature. At least in a civilized, humane society.

Thank you Sky-Hi for news coverage in support of local wildlife species.
