Joyce Engel to be honored at opening Grand County Concert Series
2012 Concert Season Dedicated to Joyce Engel
Pianist Tao Lin performs at opening concert on Friday, Jan. 13
GRAND COUNTY – Joyce Engel will be honored at the opening concert for the 2012 season of the Grand County Concert Series.
Engel recently retired as president of the organization that she helped found more than 30 years ago.
The community concert series was started by a group of creative, generous and determined people in Grand County. They believed that performers would be attracted to such a beautiful place and residents would enjoy having a concert series in their own backyard.
As times and tastes changed so did the concert series. The ninth season of classical music opens on Friday night at 7 p.m. at the Church of the Eternal Hills in Tabernash. The season is possible in large part because of Engel’s leadership.
“She gave her time, energy and wonderful sense of fun to guiding this organization through its many changes,” said board President Judy Smith. “Her relentless belief in Grand County and all of its possibilities inspired those around her. That special magic has helped to produce yet another year of great music ahead.”
This year’s schedule includes artists with exceptional credentials. Pianist Tao Lin performs Friday night. He has performed with well-known musicians and members of the Metropolitan Opera and the Philadelphia, St. Louis, National, Minnesota, Pittsburgh and Berlin Staatskapelle Orchestras. As a soloist, he has performed with the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, Winnipeg Symphony, Miami Chamber Orchestra, Knoxville Civic Orchestra and University of Miami Symphony.
Naxos, a leading classical music label, said this last year, “Chinese-American pianist Tao Lin’s appearances in Asia, North America and Europe have brought unanimous critical accolades and praise for his subtle, intimate pianism and brilliant technique.”
Engel’s dream to have a unique concert series in Grand County continues in 2012. You can listen to outstanding musicians in an intimate venue, follow it with a dessert reception to meet the artists and do it all surrounded by the beauty of Grand County.
