Just which ‘scoundrels’ are responsible for the national debt?

To the Editor:
In reply to Bruce Many’s letter (May 14), the debt that America has right now is horrible, not only for us but also our future. It seems that fighting two wars is expensive.
But, sir, in November, which “scoundrels” do you want to vote out? The Republicans who ran up the debt? Or the Democrats who are trying to bring it down?
As I see it, the Democrats are trying to help create jobs, bring down the debt, and get us out of one war. The Republicans want to lower taxes, stay in both wars, and not help Americans with health care.
If they lower taxes, who will pay for your wars? Who will pay for your children’s education? (Have you seen the cuts in all the schools lately?) Who will pay to fix the roads? Who will pay the police and firemen to protect you? Who will get your mail to your grandchildren? Who will take care of you when you are old and keep you from having to eat dog food and live on the streets?
The government does a lot for us, but we seem to take it for granted. What if we didn’t have the government? We’d live in a chaotic world, and if you don’t believe me, look outside our safe country. It’s a mad, mad, mad world out there.
The people who complain the most about the government are usually the ones who don’t ever run for office or try to make a difference in our community. So, my question to you, sir, do you volunteer in our community? Do you do anything to help make our little corner of the world a better place to live? Or do you just complain?
