Ken Anderson: Can we put the discussion of income disparity and who pays what tax to rest?
To the Editor:In response to Glenn Bakken’s letter to the editor on Jan. 25, can we please put the discussion of income disparity and who pays what tax to rest?Every U.S. citizen should take full advantage of our tax code. Anyone with investments, rich or working stiff, pays a capital gains tax rate of 15 percent. That’s the tax code regardless of political party. If you put money into a 401K, secretary or CEO, you pay no taxes if certain conditions are met. That’s the tax code. The tax rate you pay on your wages can be as high as 35 percent depending on how much you earn. That’s the tax code.Fifty percent of the people in this country pay no income tax because of low income or legal deductions. That’s the tax code. And because of legal deductions you might have someone who gets their income tax rate lowered from 35 percent to 25 percent. That’s the tax code.If you don’t like the tax code, call your congressman and senator. Good luck, because you’ll be calling rich Dems & Pubs who also like these tax breaks, including our very own Jared Polis (D-Boulder) who’s the fifth richest person in Congress.Presidents make millions after they leave office. We’ll see how many offshore accounts Obama will have. This is America.Isn’t having oodles of money or making as much as you can and keeping as much as possible the American dream? If you’re not born with a silver spoon, then money is made. Go out and make it. Ken AndersonHot Sulphur Springs
