Ken Anderson: Stealing ‘free’ newspapers is a crime

To the Editor:

State Rep. Claire Levy doesn’t believe the theft of “free” newspapers is a crime. She asks, “What is the value of what was taken?”

Well, Ms. Levy, although the paper may be “free” to their customers, there is a lot of cost and labor that produces this “free” paper. There is the cost that is paid by Colorado Mountain News Media. CMNM pays their employees and a host of vendors to put out their product. Last I heard theft of labor and material is a crime.

There are the advertisers, like myself, who pay money to promote their business, service, or event to consumers. Advertisers not only lose that value you questioned in the cost of the ads but indirectly they had their money stolen. Last I heard theft of money is still a crime. Especially mine. I didn’t pay money for one purpose to have someone take it for another.

What’s more of a crime Ms. Levy is the theft of taxpayer money by representatives like you to provide for free health care, free food, free housing, free education, and whatever other free hand-outs to those who don’t want to earn it themselves. We should help those who can’t help themselves or those who need a hand up, but nothing is “free” Ms. Levy, including this “free” paper.
