If you’re not in your boat with a fishing line in the water this weekend, then you’ll be missing out on the chance of winning thousands of dollars in cash and prizes during the 2008 Lake Granby Anglers Classic Tournament.

The fishing contest begins Saturday and continues through Sunday. The competition is sponsored by the Granby Chamber of Commerce.

The prize money that will be won includes: first place, up to $2,000 and free entry into the 2009 contest; second place, $1,400; third place, $1,000; fourth place, $800; fifth place, $600; sixth place, $400; seventh place, $300; and eighth through 10th places, gifts.

Under tournament rules, contestants must enter as two-person teams. Any person 17 years of age or younger may be teamed with a parent. No one under the age of 8 can be a contestant.

Each two-person team must do all their fishing on Lake Granby from a tournament-inspected boat. All boats participating in the contest must have the following required gear: Coast Guard-approved life jackets for each person, fire extinguisher, a distress horn or whistle, and a throw ring. The boats must also have functioning and empty live wells to keep the fish alive so that they can be released after the contest.

The tournament’s rules require that all fish weighed for the contest must be kept and carried in aerated live wells. Brown trout, rainbow trout, kokanee salmon, cutbow trout and cutthroat trout will be weighed for the tournament. Lake trout (mackinaw) are not eligible.

The two-person teams will be permitted to weigh a maximum of four eligible fish per team each day of the contest. The CDOW daily bag and possession limits must be followed.

The scoring will be determined by the pound weight of each team’s catch during the two-day tournament. Each team’s total fish weight will determine the final standings of the competition.

The tournament begins on Saturday and Sunday at 5:45 a.m., and fishing on the lake must end at 4 p.m. both days. Fishing outside the tournament hours is prohibited under the rules.

A registration-and-rules meeting will be held at 7 p.m. today at the Granby Community Center, 193 Third Street. At least one member of each two-person team must attend the meeting or the team will be disqualified.

The entry fee is $150 per team. All contestants must have a valid fishing license.
