Lakewood man dies in ATV wreck near Gore Pass

Staff Report

A fatal ATV accident occurred in Grand County on Wednesday, Sept. 2, when an as yet unnamed 48-year-old Lakewood man crashed in far western Grand County in the Gore Pass area.

Full details about the accident were not available Thursday as the county coroner worked to notify next-of-kin and determine a cause of death.

According to Lt. Dan Mayer of the Grand County Sheriff’s Office, the emergency call was received Wednesday at approximately 7:30 p.m. Mayer said the deceased was in the area on a grouse-hunting trip with friends.

According to Mayer, sometime Wednesday evening other members of the hunting party left camp to make a phone call and discovered the accident upon returning to camp. Mayer said on-scene eyewitnesses said the man was found underneath the ATV.

Shortly after arriving on scene, Grand County EMS personnel declared the man dead. County officials were setting up an autopsy Thursday morning but no official cause of death was available at press time. The man’s name is being withheld until next-of-kin are notified.
