Lashing out at all members of one party is divisive, counterproductive
To the Editor:
Thanks for yet another divisive rant by one of Grand County’s citizens (Tish Linke letter).
As a usually Democrat leaning liberal, I rarely but occasionally vote for Republican candidates because of their individual stances on issues. I personally thought Ward Churchill should have gotten fired, I own multiple guns, value our servicemen and women, am not looking for a handout, have had my Democrat signs stolen but have not taken anyone else’s, and have not trespassed or vandalized property of those that disagree with me (as some of my best friends do).
I think that our legal system was set up to let more guilty go free than it mistakenly punishes when innocent, and recognize it is a flawed system. Yes, I do defend free speech. I do not believe that a human being should be defined as a fertilized egg, or the next thing that people will want to pull off the market is the Pill, which keeps that fertilized egg from embedding itself in the uterus. I defend the so called “barbarian” she references, the doctor that does perform abortions, because I have seen the ruined lives of mother, father and child when an unwanted infant is brought into this world.
I wish that people wouldn’t lash out so broadly at me or those that I may affiliate myself with. Samuel Johnson said back in 1775 that “patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.” What most, including yours truly, believe that he meant was that false patriotism, or boastful patriotism to try to make yourself look better than someone else, is a crutch that people fall back on when they are either up to no good or have no other leg to stand on.
Well, I am a patriot. I love my country. I don’t like the direction it is going. You just don’t see me going out and accusing Republicans of being vile, nasty, awful, retarded … whatever. Some are, I am sure. Same goes for Democrats. That being said, I have many acquaintances and friends in both parties, and I daresay that they are all good people. I do not lash out broadly and ignorantly at a group. It is divisive, and does not help our county, our state or our nation .
Gosh … I feel better already.
