Letter: 51st State Initiative could tilt state senate in Republican favor

To the Editor:

OK, so Grand County won’t secede from Colorado. Not that it would have happened. Nor do I think that was the original intent of all that bluster. However, the plan that was approved by our county commissioners seems to involve having the Colorado senate apportioned on a county by county bases. Of course the Republican Party would love this.

The 2012 election resulted in Mitt Romney winning 36 Colorado counties while Barack Obama won 28. Obama, however, captured 51 percent of the overall Colorado vote versus 46 percent for Romney.

Also there are five counties that can be considered “bullet-proof” Democratic verses 10 “bullet-proof” Republican.

Generally speaking, those most solidly Republican counties are those with the least population.

This tilts the Colorado Senate electoral playing field solidly in the Republicans’ favor.

The argument that rural areas are not adequately represented begs the question: What are the negative effects of that? It also begs the question: Why should a rural voter have more say about state policy than an urban voter?

Since a Republican vote is apparently worth more than a Democratic vote, I guess that makes perfect sense.
