Letter: Columnist Hamilton’s position tracks NRA
Columnist Hamilton’s position tracks NRA
In his last two opinion columns, Bill Hamilton provided his solution to addressing the gun violence in our country. In his first column, he opined that the source of the problem began with Nurse Ratched whose actions in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” caused the closing of mental institutions. He then goes on to declare that the way to solve mass shootings is to get rid of gun-free zones and arm our teachers.
What I found a bit disingenuous about his argument was that he listed all the school shootings with unarmed teachers but failed to mention the 57 deaths in Las Vegas where a man walked into a casino that has its own heavily armed security force yet could not stop a killer who brought an arsenal into his room. Why would anyone think a teacher could do any better?
Mr. Hamilton’s position tracks with those of our politicians and the NRA who believe that the problem is all related to a lack of guns and mental instability. Yet he fails to ask why the Congress won’t allow funding to the Centers for Disease Control to study the link between gun violence and mental health. He does not ask why Congress does not legislate for more comprehensive background checks and closing gun show loopholes that allow high school kids to buy guns. He does not ask why Congress does not outlaw bumpstocks. He does not ask why people on the no-fly list are allowed to buy guns. When Senator Grassley, himself a sponsor of legislation that made it easier for mentally unstable people to get guns, says that we have not done enough about mental health, why does he not ask why Congress refuses to act. Does he really believe this is Nurse Ratched’s fault?
In recent interviews after the Parkland killings, Mike Coffman and Ted Cruz mimicked each other’s words saying they do not follow the NRA agenda, the NRA follows theirs. It is not hard to read between the lines there, just follow the money. The discussion on guns deserves more than disingenuous talking points that are bought with NRA money. The victims of Parkland, Las Vegas, Pulse Nightclub, First Baptist Church, Sandy Hook Elementary, Aurora Theater, Columbine, San Bernadino, University of Virginia all deserve better.
