Letter: Democracy or republic?

To the Editor:

The posse catches a man suspected of cattle rustling. They take a vote and the posse of 12 votes to hang the man over his objection.

As the noose is placed around the suspect’s neck, the sheriff arrives, halts the hanging and notes that the law requires that an accused be afforded a trial to determine guilt or innocence.

Is the United States a democracy or a republic? Come to Grand Lake’s celebration of Constitution Week — Sept. 15-20 — and learn more about the Constitution, the miraculous document that changed the world, and enjoy some of the many activities throughout the week.
