Letter: God is constant, not mutable
As revealed in the Bible, God is consistent from cover to cover. Recently, several letters to the editor portray God as someone he is not or that Christians should ignore who God is. Jesus broke down the Ten Commandments into two commandments – love the Lord thy God with all your heart, soul, and mind and love your neighbor as yourself.
In order to love God one must respect what he revealed about his nature, and with regard to same-sex marriage he never condoned that union. He said in the beginning and as it is written throughout the Bible marriage is between one man and one woman. The Bible reveals God is the destroyer of Sodom and Gomorrah and that a man laying with another man is an abomination. The Apostle Paul wrote several times reaffirming what was written. Jesus said he came to fulfill God’s word – not destroy it.
Some people claim man was not inspired by the spirit of God to write books over several centuries where God reveals his nature and that man is fallible so therefore man got certain parts wrong. It must be difficult for those people to decide who God is. It probably goes something like this, “I believe God said this but I can’t believe God would say that” or they just choose to ignore certain parts altogether. In essence each person who does that is creating their own God in their own image.
With respect to Jesus’ second command he said to love your neighbor as yourself. That does not mean to condone the actions of your neighbor. Unfortunately, some Christians act un-biblically in this regard. If you love someone you want your neighbor to love them also but you cannot force them to.
Some same-sex marriage advocates say it is not a religious issue. That is also incorrect. We are to love our neighbor as a person but cannot condone those choices contrary to what God has revealed. One letter writer suggested to use the term “marriage” as a religious ceremony sanctioned by God and to use “civil union” or something similar as a state sanctioned ceremony that legalizes the union. Again, like abortion, the writer is asking Christians to accept that which is contrary to God’s revealed word. Plus, those who believe in God but disagree with what “man” wrote in the Bible with respect to marriage probably won’t like this arrangement either because they want God’s blessing in that marriage.
I’m sure there are some who will respond with narrow-minded, ignorant, intolerant, and probably worse. But the reality is this conflict was created by people wanting to change the world contrary to why God created us forcing us to take a stand for God’s created plan. It is written God created us in his image but we are free to make our own choices and some would rather create a God that reflects the way they want God to be. But as it is written God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow and that’s the choice most Christians will make.
