Letter: Grand County citizens already chose Schroetlin for sheriff
To the Editor:
I am writing concerning the upcoming sheriff’s election. Most of you know that I spent 20 years with the Grand County Sheriff’s Office and retired as undersheriff in August 2013.
Here are my thoughts on the upcoming election. I was there for the Grand County Republican Assembly and, yes, I nominated Brett Schroetlin for sheriff. After the votes from the delegates chosen at the precinct caucuses were tallied, Brett Schroetlin won the majority of the votes. Then the vote went to the primary election and again Brett Schroetlin won the majority of the votes.
To me it seems that the residents of Grand County had spoken. The Democrats have not submitted a candidate for sheriff.
I have heard that John Stein, the current undersheriff (he replaced me), is running as a write-in candidate. This was decided after Rod Johnson lost the primary election. I have also heard that John Stein has chosen Rod Johnson to be his undersheriff. This raises some questions for me.
Our election system permits the running of write-in candidates, and I support this. Ask yourself who will be running the sheriff’s office if John Stein is elected? Will Sheriff Johnson continue until he retires or will it be John Stein? The next item that comes to mind is if John Stein is elected, will it continue to be business as usual, as it was under Rod Johnson?
What about all the folks that thanked me for nominating Brett Schroetlin and the positive change he would bring to the sheriff’s office after Rod Johnson’s tenure of 20-plus years. I am asking each of you that spoke to me to get out there and continue to support Brett Schroetlin.
DO NOT listen to the rumor mill but go directly to the candidates and ask those tough questions.
While at the sheriff’s office I worked with Brett. I know him well, I know what he stands for and his integrity.
Even though we are no longer in Grand County, it is was home for 20 years. I ended a 42-year career in law enforcement there and I am proud to have served the citizens of Grand County.
I put my support behind Brett Schroetlin for sheriff and I encourage each one of you to do the same. Ask your friends to support Brett Schroetlin!
