Letter: Grand County Commissioner James Newberry responds to mileage allegations

To the citizens of Grand County:

Recently, I have been accused of theft and my ethics have been questioned. The accusers point to mileage reimbursements and being paid a stipend.

I have consulted the legal staffs of both the River District and Grand County about how I handled these reimbursements. They said what I already knew: The questioned stipends and reimbursements did not violate the authority or policies of those entities. I have always reported and accounted to the IRS for any money received. As a matter of fact, I have made it a practice to not seek all reimbursements available to me at the County or the River District.

I realize as a public official, I need to expect legitimate criticism. I want my fellow citizens to be involved in Grand County government, but that doesn’t mean that I need to be the target of false and personal attacks. Since I have broken no laws, these attacks are unwarranted. I have contacted a personal attorney to get a better understanding of what my options are in relation to these false accusations.

Thank you for all the support I am receiving via Facebook and email. If you have questions, please contact me: James Newberry 970-531-2072, jlnewberry15@gmail.com.

James Newberry

Grand County commissioner
