Letter: Grand Lake could sure use a school

To the Editor:

As of Feb. 9, the Town of Grand Lake Town Board continues its efforts to acquire the former Elementary School building and associated property from the East Grand School District.

I find this a disappointment as (A) the School District has vacated Grand Lake from its venue in elementary education, and (B) that the Town of Grand Lake has to now engage in the process of accepting the responsibility of the soon-to-be vacated property.

The current contract as presented prohibits any K-9 education at the facility as it appears to conflict with the school district.

In similar situations, municipalities have entered into litigation due to the financial losses regularly received to a community or town related to the elimination of a publicly funded educational facility. It’s my belief that the property would be much more well served if there continued to be children, teachers and staff present to help our community thrive. How does any community survive without a place for children to learn and grow?

Understandably, there’s little to be done that can stop this. I sincerely hope this is not the death knell for the prosperity of Grand Lake, and will continue to strive for our fortune.
