Letter: Hoak made right call in rejecting plea deal

To the Editor:

I wanted to thank Judge Mary Hoak for her well-versed words on rejecting Lucas Ackermans plea deal. She made it very clear that in Colorado, you are responsible for any harm placed on a human being (including death) when you are under the influence of alcohol/and or drugs, which clearly states that Ackerman was nearly twice the legal limit for alcohol. It shows that not only does Judge Hoak understand the law regarding the incident, she also takes into consideration that the children of Mr. Westley will never see their father again, and neither will his widow. In Ackermans case, his children still have a father and his wife still has a husband. Judge Hoak is showing that a conscious decision led to a loss of life and that a family is forever torn apart, and that the plea deal is nothing more than a pass for people that think that there are no consequences for their actions.
