Let’s remember, the people are the government

To the Editor:

I appreciate Ken Anderson taking the time to respond to my letter.

The U.S. Constitution has many authors, two of whom you reference. These men of the late 18th Century were prodigious writers. There is a wealth of helpful information contained in the divergent views of these enlightened men. (When speaking of “arms” I believe they had visions of swords and muzzle-loaded firearms.) You claim the term “regulated” does not mean “legislated.” How does regulation have meaning without legislating a means of enforcement? I could just as easily interpret those passages you quoted as an endorsement of the notion that “the right of the people to keep and bear arms” means the right of the people to form well regulated militias. In 18th century enlightenment thinking, the people are the government. That is the basic principle of our government.
