Letter: Loss of Alco could deter visitors

To the Editor:

Here’s a short meditation on birthday banners and underdrawers …

As a part-time resident of Grand County for over 60 years, I was alarmed to hear of Alco’s bankruptcy and future closing. Not only will the lack of a department store in the county be a huge inconvenience for local residents, it will ultimately hold back the county’s progress as a first class resort area.

What if a vacationer arrives for a long weekend on the slopes, and discovers they’ve failed to pack their “delicates?” (I’m quite certain the wonderful local thrift stores are not allowed to sell used underpants.) What if the visitor’s kid is having a birthday, and they’d like to buy an assortment of party supplies for a celebration in their rental condo?

Amenities are important. I think Fraser/Winter Park should be actively and cooperatively searching for a department store to replace Alco. Without such a facility, word will get around that the area really doesn’t provide all the necessities, and many vacationers will look elsewhere.
