Partisanship at Constitution Week, poor use of government funds

I’ve not had a chance to attend Constitution Week in Grand Lake, but I’ve heard many good things about it. So when I heard that Milwaukee Sheriff David Clarke would be a speaker, I was very surprised and concerned. I had heard Sheriff’s Clarke’s comments at the Republican convention and in other situations. When I saw that Constitution Week was sponsored in part by government entities, including the Town of Grand Lake and Grand County, I could not imagine that such a clearly partisan speaker had being invited. Here are two excerpts from Clarke’s comments for Fox News. “The Democrat National Convention seems to be mirroring for the American people exactly the kind of disarray and contempt for truth, laws, and order that progressive policies will continue to wreak on the country, if given the chance to lead. The Democrat Party’s embrace of chaos and criminality is the last step in breaking the backs of this community.” As someone who supports progressive policies, I’d hope that a speaker invited for Constitution Week could be more objective, fair and diplomatic than to accuse progressives of having “contempt for truth, laws and order” and embracing “chaos and criminality.” This disdain and lack of respect for alternative perspectives does not seem to represent our constitution. If this event was only funded by our local Republican party and private individuals and companies, it might be reasonable to invite Sheriff Clarke. Given the number of government-entity sponsors, this invitation was a very poor use of government funds.
