Letter: ObamaCare is entrenched in ideology

To the Editor:

Local pundit Felicia Muftic wants us to be “pragmatic” when it comes to ObamaCare. Like the movie line says, “You keep using that word. I don’t think it means what you think it means.” Ms. Muftic basically says the sacrifice of a few will help the greater good. The Affordable Care Act is promoted to every American as essential for the good of everyone as it will cover 30 million uninsured people. What they didn’t tell us is that most of those would be covered through Medicaid expansion paid for by those paying double or triple their current premiums.

For three years now, the Congressional Budget Office, whose estimates are almost always low, has said more than 60 million people will still be uninsured in the individual and employer markets after ObamaCare is fully implemented in 2015. A recent non-partisan study by Duke University puts that number at 127 million. For every person signing up for ObamaCare, 50 people are losing their insurance because it does not meet the minimum coverage as mandated by the legislation. Some will find ObamaCare a better deal. But, we now know millions are being forced to pay double or triple of what they were paying to cover for those who get Medicaid or subsidies. And millions more who had insurance they liked but cannot afford the higher premiums will now simply go without it. And this is pragmatic?

The reality is ObamaCare is ideologically driven. That ideology says big government knows what’s best for you and me creating dependency from cradle to grave. Despite the poor legislation the president and his most fervent supporters like Ms. Muftic are fiercely fighting to forge ahead rather than change the law. The repeal or changing of ObamaCare would strike at the very heart of this ideology. The liberal goal is a single-payer socialistic healthcare system. After three years and the full resources of the federal government are they really this incompetent overseeing the building of a website while millions lose their coverage?

This is strictly one-party legislation, and if liberals are unable to successfully implement ObamaCare as written then it cuts at the root of the basic foundation of the Democratic Party, the Party’s future political trust, and the Obama legacy as just another ideologue who couldn’t accomplish bi-partisan legislation.

Health care costs are out of control and many people do need help. Let’s start over and work together by keeping the good parts and craft bi-partisan legislation that is good for America and not ideologically driven.
