Letter of Thanks: Volunteer to Ride Rockies responders
To the Editor:
Recently I volunteered with Ride the Rockies for the sixth time. As someone from way out of state (Vermont!) I was very much looking forward to our stay in Winter Park, since it was the only one of the host communities I hadn’t visited before. The first day of the ride, from Boulder to Winter Park brought cold weather, snow, sleet and fog to Berthoud Pass. As a matter of safety for the riders, most bicyclists were stopped in either Empire or the pass and not allowed to ride farther. We were so disappointed, as the welcome planned in Winter Park was one we all were looking forward to. The logistics of getting so many riders and bikes into Winter Park did not allow Winter Park’s hospitality to shine. However, the cooperation and generosity of so many in the area made it possible for all riders and bikes to get safely into Winter Park at a reasonable hour. I know I will leave some people/organizations out, but special thanks go to Grand County EMS, Winter Park/Fraser Police, and Winter Park Fire Department. Many, many others, both private individuals and businesses, helped out in many important ways. Next time I’m in Colorado, I’ll make it a point to come and spend some time there. A big thank you to a wonderful community.
