Letter: Radical Islam deserves ridicule

To the Editor:

The Texas Mohammed cartoon contest turned out to be a success in at least two ways. First, it rid us of two radical Islamist crazies, and second, it reminded us that there are those who seek to deny us our right of free speech.

We have all seen, read and heard despicable slurs made toward various racial, political, gender and religious people, beliefs and groups. The cartoon contest should have come and gone like other such activities. The attack seems to demonstrate a need for free speech to be tested from time to time. We don’t want any group to feel they are immune from tacky criticism, especially if they threaten murder. Countries such as Iran and Saudi Arabia have that threat as government policy.

An unfortunate result of the Texas attack might be to intimidate those who offer responsible criticisms of the brutal elements of the Islamic faith at a time when some immature minds are being recruited to the radical cause. There is plenty to criticize about Islam, and no one should be afraid to point that out. Any religion that can only hold onto its followers by threatening to murder them deserves ridicule.
