Letter: Stand-your-ground law is dangerous to society

To the Editor:

This Zimmerman case brings up some interesting images of gun law. You can legally carry a gun, and if you feel threatened you can use it. That is the result of this incident as interpreted by our legal system and existing gun laws. So if an armed white guy feels threatened by a black kid in a hoody he can pull out his gun and shoot him. Do you suppose that unarmed kid felt threatened as he was being stalked and then shot? This sounds a lot like the lack of law in Afghanistan and a number of other lawless cultures. You carry a gun and if you feel threatened by someone, you shoot them. Just as the Taliban was threatened by Malala, a young schoolgirl, Mr. Zimmerman was threatened by Travon, a young black man – so they shot them. I always thought our laws were meant to protect me from this kind of violence. Now I find that they make me legally vulnerable to this kind of violence. Do we really need guns running loose on the streets of America? I don’t think our forefathers who approved the 2nd Amendment to our Constitution envisioned the United States and Afghanistan, one under the law and one without a law, handling the gun problem virtually the same way; and with the same result of thousands of citizens killed and wounded in gun violence. Can America put down their guns and try living in peace – pursuing life, liberty, and happiness?
