To the Editor:

I am a full time Grand County resident and enjoy reading the Sky-Hi. Your new year edition and specifically the 2015 Year in Review is troubling. I’m disappointed that the story of James Newberry has warranted three mentions including a mug shot for what was determined he is a criminal. It was of no surprise that your paper didn’t miss a beat in publishing his sentencing. Having once worked in a corporation, which required travel both domestic and internationally, I am very familiar with the task of filling out expense reports and I was terrible at it. I’d either forget to collect the receipts or procrastinate reporting them. I most certainly had to guess often times and am certain travel usually cost me money that could have been reimbursed. I can’t say I know all the details of Mr. Newberry’s case but a few things are obvious: it has cost him his job and his reputation. He has been exploited due to his public office position. And it is common knowledge that others have been after his job at every election. All this for what may have amounted to a few hundred dollars? I’d like to say GIVE THE MAN A BREAK! Certainly his service to the county over the years far outweighs the mistakes that were made.
