Letter to the editor: Coroner heartbroken over Stark comments
Retired Grand County coroner
I’m heartbroken and ashamed of some community comments on the May 15 article, “State whistleblower flags death of local child.” Especially those of you that are in the medical profession, shame on you! Do you make a diagnosis without all the facts?
I was the chief deputy coroner and elected coroner for a combined 35 years. In a small county such as ours, we know a good portion of the people we are called to investigate. This job is tough. I can honestly say that Grand County has some of the most loving and compassionate people around. But they can also pick up the first rock to throw when they don’t have all the facts and feel compelled to comment. Social media has given people the idea they are experts on every subject, when in fact they have no idea what the job entails.
I’m not a physician. I am a state and nationally certified medicolegal death investigator. We have a forensic pathologist on the Front Range who performs autopsies not only for our county, but other counties as well. Together, we certify cause and manner of death. There are some families that don’t like the rulings, but we must deal with the facts and the information in front of us. Do you honestly believe that Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the attorney general’s office investigating this would ignore anything criminal?
I know without a doubt that critical information was not included and comments and quotes were taken out of context! Medical and autopsy reports of minors are confidential and not included in this article. You did not get the whole story, only pieces and parts that sell newspapers! This case was sent to the district attorney’s office, and all agencies agreed — no criminal intent from anyone involved. It was a tragic accident!
