To the Editor:

I wish to voice my concern over the decision of the U.S. Forest Service to close 29,000 acres of the Arapaho National Forest to all use for about 2-1/2 months starting on Sept. 4.

These dates include all of the major big game hunting seasons for the 2012 year and affect a large portion of game management Unit 28. The Forest Service has indicated that hunters should “plan accordingly.”

The planning of a big game hunt in Colorado is more than a seven-day event, especially if you are an archery hunter that goes without the assistance of a guide service. I am sure that groups will come to their chosen area only to find a sign that says, in effect, try again next year.

I am sure that with some serious thought the officials involved could have done this in a way to take into account all of the folks that use this publicly owned resource. Perhaps closing half at a time would allow everyone to pursue their chosen recreational activity.

This closure will have an adverse effect on the economy of Grand County. I know there will be folks that indicate that I don’t know the magnitude of the problem; however, I am fully aware of the damage done by Mother Nature and, as usual, it’s the people involved that are the problem, not the uncontrollable forces of nature.

In closing I would like a response from some of the community leaders, special interest groups, and other local officials that think this is a good idea. If you can’t close and enforce on 10 acres with the people you have, how do you propose to close and enforce 29,000?
