Letter to the editor: Urgent call for action to protect our community

Our community is in the midst of an environmental crisis and immediate action is imperative to safeguard our health and well-being. The asphalt processing plant on County Road 60 may be a source of relentless pollution, emitting noxious odors and potentially harmful toxins into the air.

The stench of burning tar and the noxious fumes enveloping our homes are unmistakable signs that something is seriously amiss. We cannot afford to ignore this pressing issue any longer.

Here’s why.
1. Oversight: Essential tests for dangerous toxins and air pollution at the processing plant have not occured since 2022 (at the time this was written). This oversight is unacceptable and we demand immediate rectification.
2. Urgent air quality testing: We insist that state health department’s Air Pollution Control Division swiftly conduct comprehensive air quality testing at the plant, specifically during peak processing hours in the morning to ensure accurate results
3. Transparency and accountability: Our community deserves access to the inspection and air test reports. The health and safety of our residents, including our children who attend the Granby Elementary School just 2.4 miles from the processing plant, are at stake.
4. Immediate halt: We demand an immediate halt of operations at the asphalt processing plant on County Road 60 until a thorough and comprehensive air pollution test is carried out.

We cannot stress enough the urgency of this situation. The time to act is now. Our lives and the well-being of future generations depend on our collective response.

Sincerely,
Melanie
Granby resident
