Letter: U.S. Senate should own up to Farm Bill debacle

To the Editor:

Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet needs to be more forthright in his description of Washington dysfunction.

I suspect — or at least hope — that Senator Bennet is aware that the Farm Bill was passed in the House back on or about July 11 of this year. This was after the House stripped out the “nutrition title” — affecting food stamps and local food banks.

Herein lays the problem. It is “politics as usual” to take items like food stamps and the like and tie them to a bill that admittedly needs to be passed. Rather than openly address these separate entities and debating them on their own merit, you and other Senators have tied these two unrelated issues into one bill and blame the Republican-controlled House for “politics as usual” in not passing the Farm Bill.

It is precisely such maneuvers that make it difficult to control budgets and expenses. Issues like food stamps need to be addressed rather than passed under the table.

I do not think Senator Bennet’s description of the problem in passing the Farm Bill is helpful — or even honest. It is time for both sides of the aisle to address the issues, especially those issues that affect government spending while our debt keeps increasing.
