Letter: Westley family faces medical bills, struggles from July 4 tragedy

To the Editor:

Estes Park and Grand Lake are irrevocably connected through tragedy.

Four months after the Westley family was hit by a drunk driver, Lucas Ackerman, after celebrating July 4 in Grand Lake, the drunk driver was offered a plea bargain. This stunned the local Estes Park community, where the family of Greg Westley (who was killed) resides.

The family is on its way to healing, physically and emotionally. However, the head of their family, Greg, will never return home. His loving family members left behind need your help.

While the drunk driver who hit the Westley family (putting three family members in the hospital and killing the father, Greg) has been home with his family for the past four months, the Westley family is struggling without Greg. According to Greg Westley’s cousin, Jeff Carroll, there are “daunting medical bills and other long-term expenses that the family is facing.” A website, HelpWestleyFamily.org has been set up to allow people to make donations to the family via paypal.

Greg and his family are well-known in their home community of Estes Park, through the Boy Scouts, where Greg was a leader, the Catholic Church, swimming, and more. The family is very private, but they have the spiritual strength to come through this senseless tragedy. Financially, it will be a struggle. Help them through HelpWestleyFamily.org and continue to send prayers their way.
