In a world dominated by screens and digital entertainment, board games are making a triumphant return. Not just a source of entertainment, games are also powerful tools for learning, mental wellness, bonding with others and offering creative outlets. If you have a Grand County Library District card, you are in luck, because each library has an impressive collection of award-winning board games available for checkout.
Board games are a fantastic way to learn new skills and concepts. Take Continent Race, for example, which helps players learn geography in a fun and engaging way. Cool Cat Math Game makes math exciting, turning numbers into a thrilling adventure. Prime Climb is another excellent choice for math enthusiasts, combining strategy with arithmetic practice. Catan and Ticket to Ride teach resource management, strategic planning and critical thinking. A library favorite, Spy Alley, sharpens deduction skills.
Playing games can reduce stress and anxiety, providing a much-needed break from daily routines. Games like Exploding Kittens and Uno Emoji offer light-hearted fun that can lift spirits and create laughter. The social interaction involved in playing games can also combat feelings of loneliness and depression, making it a perfect activity for mental wellness.
“Forced family fun time” is a concept introduced to me by a close friend. Just because game night might sound “forced,” it can be a blast! Sitting down for a game night can create lasting memories and strengthen family bonds.
Do You Really Know Your Family? is a game geared towards sparking conversations and laughter. Minute to Win It and Beat That! are great challenges, encouraging everyone to participate with lightheartedness. These moments can be invaluable, teaching the importance of taking turns, following rules, and handling both victory and defeat gracefully.
November is International Games Month! Join us at Granby Library on Thursday, Nov. 7, for Game Night from 5:30-10:30 p.m. in the Community Meeting Room. There will be games galore. Stop in for a short visit or stay all night. Light snacks will be provided. All are welcome!
Snippets and Slapzi challenge players to think outside the box and come up with creative solutions. The Hygge Game encourages players to share stories and ideas, fostering a creative and open-minded atmosphere. These games not only entertain but also inspire players to think creatively and explore new ideas.
Board games are excellent for building and strengthening friendships, and meeting new people. The key is creating a relaxed setting where people can interact, share experiences and enjoy each other’s company. Hues and Cues and Spontuneous encourage communication and teamwork, helping players get to know each other better.
Community game nights are becoming increasingly popular, offering a welcoming environment for socializing and making new friends.
The library district’s diverse collection of award-winning board games caters to all ages and interests. This collection is a fantastic resource for anyone looking to try new games without the commitment of purchasing them. Plus, it’s a great way to discover hidden gems and expand your gaming horizons.
So, next time you’re looking for something fun to do, check out a board game. You might just find your new favorite game and make some great memories along the way.
