Library Corner: Career change ahead

Grand County Library District

Needing to reignite your career direction? Feeling a bit stuck? Not sure what to highlight on your resume so you truly stand out? Let Grand County libraries help you. As part of our Grand County Libraries drive to connect people to boundless opportunities, there are multiple resources available to you.

The Grand County job seeker is at a strong launching point with the low unemployment rate of 2.4 percent (August 2018, Bureau of Labor and Statistics); however, employers are really looking to find that right fit, and we know seasonal employment is our bread and butter on the east end of the county where openings abound, but finding a year-round benefited career position is trickier.

How can Grand County libraries help you? A few options. You can come use a computer if you need one for typing up resumes, scanning and sending documents, or performing searches. Go online to gcld.org and tap on “Ebooks & Learning” to find Glassdoor, a job search and research site for careers. Or … really take the leap and get serious by joining us for our upcoming adult program providing career transition coaching.

Career Transition Workshops are a three-part series starting Thursday, Nov. 1 at 5:30 p.m. in the Granby Library. Bob Bowman, career transition coach, will work with participants to help identify careers that utilize skills, passions, and goals. The following Thursday, career seekers will develop a strategic plan so employers will take notice and set your resume in the interview pile after the first 30-second scan sort. Thursday, Nov. 15 is set aside to complete resume work, address negotiating compensation, and discuss and practice interview skills.

For more information on how we can connect you to boundless opportunities, check out gcld.org for our Program calendar or stop by and chat with your local librarian.

Polly Gallagher is the director of public services for the Grand County Library District.
