Library Corner: Libraries at the Heart of the Community
Grand County Library District
Here in Grand County, we value community. We understand the importance of working together and looking out for our neighbors. Grand County isn’t just a dot on a map, but a living entity with thousands of faces made up of people not demographics.
And what is at the heart of this entity? Your local library.
A library is the place in every community that is owned by its members. Your library belongs to you. Libraries are open to everyone, provide resources and services, and are a place for people to connect and learn. From babies to seniors, there’s something for everyone.
Your free library card gives you access to over 30 million books, DVDs, music, computers, classes, musical instruments, online databases, movie streaming, and much, much more. Did you know you can even check out state park passes? You can!
Not only does your local library give you access to such a wealth of free resources, but it’s also just a great place to come and hang out for a while! When you walk through the doors of any of our branches, you’ll find knowledgeable, helpful library staff in a space humming with happy energy.
If you need some time alone, we have quiet, comfy reading spaces and study rooms. You may find a jigsaw puzzle waiting to be assembled. Some of our branches even have soft chairs in front of roaring fires where you can ready the daily paper or the latest issue of your favorite magazine.
Looking for a little social time? Your library offers a myriad of ways to connect with others. Story times allow families and tots to get to know and support one another. Our book clubs are fun ways to make friends and share ideas. You can attend programs and art displays tailored to a variety of interests. Some branches even have meeting rooms where you can host your next event. And of course, every child and teen in Grand County knows there’s no better place to hang out after school!
So the next time you see that welcoming library sign on the highway, follow it to discover one of the most amazing assets of your town. Your local library is so much more than a warehouse full of books. It’s the hub and heart of your community.
“A library in the middle of community is a cross between an emergency exit, a life raft, and a festival. They are cathedrals of the mind; hospitals of the soul; theme parks of the imagination.” Caitlin Moran
