Library Corner: Moms and libraries make life better
Grand County Library District
When I was finishing the first grade while living in a very small town in Oregon, my mom came home and announced, “I got a job today! Girls, we are going to spend the summer in a look-out tower.” Wow! What a fun summer that would be, but we had some things to get ready.
First, Mom wanted to be sure that my sister, just out of third grade, and I had books to read. It mattered to her that we did not let our learning or reading skills slip during the summer months. Secondly, we didn’t have television, iPads, iPhones, or even electricity at the tower! What’s a mom to do?
The library near us was in a larger town, the county seat of Lakeview that was fourteen miles away. Mom loaded us into the car and we took a day trip to the library and, of course, the grocery store. I remember the “library lady” being very kind to us. Mom must have been a desperate woman—we were both able to check out enough books to fill a grocery sack and keep them all summer! That summer I read my books as well as my sister’s. The Little House on the Prairie series were the ones I remember, even though they were not MY books!
All of this to say that our public libraries offer valuable services to customers. The Grand County Library District belongs to a statewide consortium that allows us to borrow books, DVDs, audiobooks, magazines, and even music CDs from not only our five libraries, but from libraries all over Colorado. This is a tremendous benefit. I always say that Libraries break down geographic barriers.
In honor of Mother’s Day, we hope moms in Grand County reap the same benefits my mom did. Use your libraries!
